This is not a reference for some academic issue, but a domain of a website www.reference.com which is just like a powerful resource center that could serve as your life encyclopedia. And the two of the most powerful online encyclopedia is contained in this website, the Columbia Encyclopedia and the Wikipedia which I love best.
The most useful tool in this website would go to the search engine. That would be no less than the Google search engine. Till now, 4:00 pm October 12th, 2009, there had about one million and 300 thousand words searched by this search engine. You could see that so many people are deeply rely on this Reference. And the search engine appeared in the homepage is just for the Encyclopedia. As you come to different sections, such as Dictionary, Thesaurus, Translator and Web, the search engine would be changed into more specialized one. Let me give you a more detailed illustration. If you use the search engine provided in the Dictionary section, taking the word “kelp” as an example, the search result would appear to be the detailed linguistic information of “kelp”. “Any large, brown, cold-water seaweed…” But the result coming from the Thesaurus search engine of the same word “kelp” would be something much more different. And I have no need to say too much about the Translator and Web section. I believe you could guess out what the result would be.
And going back to the homepage, you could find what’s popular at the left side. There are daily crossword, crossword solver, full text translator, toolbar, word games and some other tools and resources. As if you set www.reference.com as your homepage, you could even learn a word each day. Because there is a section named Word of The Day just under the Popular section. What’s today’s word? It’s Descry, as word that you may rarely see. It means to catch sight of, to detect. And you could also find another section named Question of the Day. “where does the word family come from?” would be today’s focus. You may use this word frequently, but you may never know its orientation. And that would be the charm of this section, Question of the Day.
This is just another Google in the internet world which would be much more functional and specialized. And it never looks like the Google or other search engine websites’ simple or even dull design. It really lead the online search engine into a more abundant, more attractive design style.
